PROJEKT: The project proposed here is an integral part of the DFG priority program "Clusters in contact with surfaces", in which especially the properties of metal particles deposited from the gas phase in contact with a surface are to be investigated.

We plan to experimentally study the electronic structure of silver and cobalt clusters with the method of low-temperature scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS). Starting from results obtained in the first period, silver clusters on HOPG and Ge(O01) will be analysed with respect to tunnelling transport. In the size regime between one and three nanometers we expect a significant change in the electronic level density. Ultimately it should become possible to significantly increase the spectral quality.
We expect that together with density functional calculations obtained within the priority programme a basic understanding of the electronic properties of the silver cluster-surface systems will be reached. During the course of the project emphasis will additionally be put on a complementary system with high density of states, i.e., cobalt clusters. These are of interest for several groups within the priority programme, due to the particular magnetic, electronic and reactive properties.
